Walmgate has been burned and bombarded with cannon fire, and there was an attempt to undermine it using gunpowder during the siege of York in 1644. The mine has caused the ground to subside over time, which is probably the cause of the sagging in the side walls that is still visible. It was partially rebuilt after the siege, and completed in 1648 - this is recorded over the outer arch.
